Big rise in tenancy disputes
Tenancy Deposit Scheme
The Dispute Service Limited (TDSL) has recorded a huge rise in the number of tenancy deposit disputes. In it's 2008 - 2009 report the not for profit company says that it dealt with 7,068 disputes up from 2,103 the previous year. Even allowing for the growth in the number of registered tenancies, the number of disputes exceeded the organisation's own estimates by more than 2,300 cases.
Over £694 million in deposits were protected by TDSL up from £466 million in the previous year.
Inventories
TDSL highlights in its report that "inventories are often absent or insufficiently thorough." It is clear that accurate inventories often prevent the need for adjudication in the first place, or allow for prompt resolution of any dispute.
